Success stories
Below are a few of the people we have helped. We felt that in order to retain our integrity as an organisation, it was vital that we asked the permission of the victims, whether it was acceptable to put their stories on the internet. Understandably people are often quite embarrassed about the money they have lost or the abuse they have suffered.
• Dora a resident in Kyebando, was almost conned out of 42million Ugandan shillings, which is the equivalent of £14,482. The traditional “healer” had coerced her into selling her house on the advice that it was full of bad omens and bringing her bad luck in life. She then had to give the full cost of her house to the “healer” in order to pay for his services in removing the “omens”. Whilst looking for buyers, Dorah heard RACHO on the radio; this specific talk was aimed at raising awareness of fraud within the “healing” process. Thus she then called us asking for advice on what she should do in the face of her problems. RACHO was able to not only give her advice, but stop her from losing a vast amount of money.
• Earlier this year, a boy who cannot be named for various reasons, had his genitals cut off by a traditional healer, as he had been denounced as a “witch”. RACHO was able to offer support and counselling for the boy and his family and contributed towards the medical expenses ensuring that the boy would not suffer more than he had already. Whilst we were obviously unable to do anything towards saving his genitalia, he is now receiving full support and counselling.
• Martin, a resident in Kawempe, was regularly paying anywhere in the region of 4million USH to 15 million USH for the “help” he was receiving from the traditional healers, it was not until he saw a RACHO program on TV, that he realised how he was being duped out of money, for advice that served only to make his problems worse.
